De première wordt afgesloten met “We’ll meet again!”

Een onderscheiding als ultieme verrassing ……. de ‘Erasmusspeld’

Totaal onverwacht komt de Rotterdamse Burgemeester Ahmed Aboutaleb met een grote verrassing.

De genodigden voelen al wat er gaat gebeuren.

Veel loftuitingen aan het adres van Ed van Lierde ……

…… voor zijn jarenlange inzet voor het uit de vergetelheid halen en houden van de Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd.

Speech Mr. Ahmed Aboutaleb, Mayor of Rotterdam

Ladies and gentlemen,

You have just looked at the impressive documentary about the demise of the ss Slamat and two British destroyers. This documentary would never have come without the tireless work of Mr Van Lierde. Therefore I would like to address Mr Van Lierde.

Mr Van Lierde you have a large collection of attributes and objects showing Dutch shipping history. One of the most important shipping companies was the Royal  Rotterdam Lloyd. This shipping company and others disappeared from the scene by merging into the Royal Nedlloyd in 1970. This threatened to fade the memory of the illustrious existence of those shipping companies.

But no one was counting on you Mr Van Lierde. You decided to keep this memory alive. You made your own collection accessible to the public. First in a new built building at your home, but you continued to seek for a permanent and dignified place for the collection.

You also were the initiator of the Great Slamat commemoration about the sinking of ss Slamat. This ship was a passengerliner of the Rotterdam Lloyd. On April 27th 1941, this steam ship was heading for disaster, as we just saw in the documentary. It is you who was able to organize that commemoration. That happened in 2011 in the Laurens Church. Much people attended: victims’ Next of Kin, former employees of the Lloyd and dignitaries from the Netherlands and abroad.

You are the driving force behind this Commemoration as well as behind the documentary and also it’s you who managed to find a more permanent place for your collection that recalls the maritime past. You have secured future with an important piece of Rotterdam shipping history. In addition, there are some 250 persons who signed on your museum and pay annual financial contributions to sustain the museum. Along with the help of several sponsors assuring the future of the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd Museum Foundation.

Mr Van Lierde, without you this chapter was not written. The municipality of Rotterdam appreciates your dedication and commitment. To underline this I may award you, on behalf of the Municipal Council, with the ‘Erasmus pin’ ……. intended for people who have made long-term merit to the city of Rotterdam.

De zilveren Erasmus wordt door de Burgemeester opgespeld.

De organisatieleiding van de première Slamat-documentaire (Paul Slikkerveer en Ed van Lierde) feliciteren elkaar. De gasten applaudiseren instemmend.

Burgemeester Ahmed Aboutaleb neemt afscheid.

Van Lierde beklaagde zich inderdaad over gebrek aan belangstelling vanuit, met name, de Nederlandse overheid. Bij aanvang van de première bleek dat, na meer dan negen maanden inspanningen, noch ons Koningshuis, noch de Nederlandse overheid, noch de Koninklijke Nederlandse Marine een afvaardiging naar deze manifestatie hadden gestuurd.

Het feit dat op 2 mei elders in Nederland herdenkingen met betrekking tot de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden gehouden was ongetwijfeld een belangrijke factor in dat ‘niet aanwezig zijn’.

Burgemeester Aboutaleb, die ’s middag nog bij de herdenking van ‘Operatie Manna’ aanwezig was, kwam direct daarna naar Lantarenvenster om daar voor een volledige verrassing te zorgen. Burgemeester Aboutaleb, maakte daarmee in zijn eentje goed wat de rest van officieel Nederland liet liggen!

De uitgebreide afvaardiging uit het buitenland was daarentegen zeer eervol! Sommigen van deze VIP’s vroegen mij waarom er geen Nederlandse vertegenwoordiging was, een pijnlijke vraag en een nog pijnlijker antwoord.

For the second time in a few days Ed van Lierde was decorated on a emotional way. This time by Slamat Next of Kin, Margaret Corston. Ed was decorated with Eds’ highly-loved Maori symbolism.
