Hieronder treft u, in omgekeerde volgorde van uitreiking, de personen aan van wie onze stichting heeft gemeend dat hij/zij, nog in leven zijnde of postuum, met een ‘Tweede Wereldoorlog-Eremedaille’ herkend, erkend en geëerd dienen te worden, dit naar aanleiding van hun daden van dienstbaarheid en moed

Below you will find, in reverse order of presentation, the persons for whom our Foundation believes that he/she, still living or posthumously, should be recognised and honoured with a ‘World War II Medal of Honour’, based on their acts of service and courage.

‘Operation Demon’ – 1941, brief history

Early 1941, the proud Rotterdam Lloyd passenger liner ss SLAMAT, was converted into a troop-ship and came under the control of the British Ministry of War Transport. She was deployed in the evacuation of 60.000 allied troops from Greece, known as: ‘Operation Demon’. On April 27 ss SLAMAT was lying at anchor in the Bay of Nauplion (Greece), British, Australian and New Zealand troops came on board as planned. The troops were hastily boarded because Captain Tjalling Luidinga was instructed to leave port before dawn. Although not all troops were on board, SLAMAT weighed anchor at 04.15 hours and left in convoy, sailing South. direction Crete and Alexandria (Egypt). At that time SLAMAT had 600 allied troops and 217 crew members on board. Surgeon Captain Dr. Lennox Douglas and his NZ-Medical Team prepared for the things that were inevitable to come!

Most who survived the murderous German attacks were taken on board British destroyer HMS DIAMOND, also Lennox Douglas who survived the attack on and sinking of ss SLAMAT. During the performance of his medical, life-saving task, in which he saved many lives, he himself had to die.

‘The Ceremony took place at the famous Waitaki Boys’ Highschool at Oamaru, the place, where Lennox Douglas laid a solid foundation for his profession as a surgeon!

(Pictures: Michael Robins) Eindelijk, na 83 jaar krijgt, de naaste familie van Lennox Douglas waar zij recht op heeft, namelijk: een Nederlandse ‘Tweede Wereldoorlog Eremedaille uit handen van de oprichter van de stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd – Heritage, Ed van Lierde (rechts). Twee Slamat-dochters Annie Boys and Cass Robins, en links, Slamat-kleindochter Kate Saxton nemen de Eremedaille, in alle emotie, in ontvangst!

Finally, after 83 years, Next of Kin of Lennox Douglas receives what they are entitled to, namely: a Dutch ‘World War II Medal of Honour from the founder of the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd – Heritage foundation, Ed van Lierde (left). Two Slamat daughters Cass Robins, Annie Boys and Slamat granddaughter KateSaxton receiving the Medal of Honour in all emotions!

De Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Heritage (ook wel ‘Lloyd-Atelier’ genoemd) heeft per 12 oktober 2023 twee afzonderlijke Eremedailles in het leven geroepen.
De ‘TWEEDE WERELDOORLOG EREMEDAILLE’	De ‘ROTTERDAMSCHE LLOYD EREMEDAILLE’
De ‘Tweede Wereldoorlog Eremedaille’ Deze Eremedaille is gecreëerd om de leemte op te vullen die de Nederlandse overheid heeft opengelaten bij het toekennen van onderscheidingen aan Koopvaardijpersoneel op Nederlandse schepen van de Nederlandse scheepvaartmaatschappij N.V. ROTTERDAMSCHE LLOYD. Zo werden/worden alleen Nederlandse bemanningsleden op genoemde Nederlandse schepen onderscheiden en niet de buitenlandse bemanningsleden op genoemde Nederlandse schepen die hetzelfde of meer hebben gepresteerd of zelfs hun leven hebben moeten geven. Bij de Eremedaille behoort een oorkonde .‘ WWII Medal of Hounour’ This Medal of Honor was created to fill the gap left open by the Dutch government in awarding awards to Merchant Navy personnel on Dutch ships of the Dutch shipping company N.V. ROTTERDAMSCHE LLOYD. For example, only Dutch crew members on the Dutch ships mentioned were/are distinguished and not the foreign crew members on the Dutch ships mentioned who performed the same or more or even had to give their lives. The Medal of Honour includes a Certificate of Honour.

De ‘Rotterdamsche Lloyd Eremedaille’ Door het toekennen van deze Eremedaille wil de stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Heritage blijk geven van haar waardering en dankbaarheid voor bewezen diensten en/of uitzonderlijke prestaties en/of een uitzonderlijke materiële bijdrage aan: De Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd en/of haar voorgangers, het voormalige Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Museum en het huidige Lloyd-Atelier. ‘Royal Rotterdam Lloyd Medal of Honour’ By awarding this Medal of Honour, the Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Heritage Foundation would likes to demonstrate its appreciation and gratitude for services rendered and/or exceptional performance and/or an exceptional material contribution to: The Royal Rotterdam Lloyd and/or its predecessors, the former Royal Rotterdam Lloyd Museum and the current Lloyd-Atelier.

Naast onderscheidingen van de Nederlandse overheid (medailles en eretekens), bestaan er vele onderscheidingen die door particuliere organisaties worden toegekend, zoals door: Het Nederlandse Rode Kruis, de Brandweer, de Friese Elfstedentocht, Vierdaagsekruis, het Carnegie Heldenfonds, een aantal Nederlandse Orden en nu ook door de Eremedailles van de stichting ‘Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd Heritage’, etc …………………………………………………………………………………. Uitvoering van beide Eremedailles Een verzilverd metalen kruis met vier blauwe armen, verbeeldende de vier wereldoceanen. In het midden een vergulde cirkel met daarin de Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd kroon, daaronder de letters: RL. Direct aan de binnenkant van de cirkel staan de teksten: WAARDERING & DANKBAARHEID en LLOYD-ATELIER. De twee tekstdelen zijn door twee dikke punten gesepareerd. De achterzijde van de medaille is blanco. De Eremedaille hangt aan een lint met daarop een Nederlandse vlag in verticale banen. Aan de bovenkant van het lint is een verzilverde lintdragerbevestigd met de inscriptie: ROTTERDAMSCHE LLOYD. Aan de achterzijde van de lintdrager is een veiligheidsspeld bevestigd. De uitvoering van de Tweede Wereldoorlog-Eremedaille laat een andere inscriptie in de lintdrager zien, namelijk: TWEEDE WERELDOORLOG . What are both Medals of Honour made of? A silver-plated metal cross with four blue arms, depicting the four world oceans. In the middle a gilded circle containing the Royal Rotterdam Lloyd crown, below the letters: RL. Directly on the inside of the circle are the texts: APPRECIATION & GRATITUDE and LLOYD-ATELIER. The two parts of the text are separated by two bold points. The reverse of the Medal is blank. The Medal of Honour hangs on a ribbon with a Dutch flag in vertical stripes. At the top of the ribbon is a silver plated ribbon carrier attached with the inscription: ROTTERDAMSCHE LLOYD. On the back of the ribbon carrier is asafety pin attached. The Second World War Medal of Honour shows another inscription in the ribbon carrier, namely: SECOND WORLD WAR.
